The docs state that xfce4-notifyd doesn't support sound and I haven't ever heard it either but the thing that confuses me is the "Mute sounds" option in notification settings.

I think the documentation is out of date. See: https://forum.xfce.org/viewtopic.php?pid=74058 and the linked to topic on the Arch forums for more detail (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=284704).
Note: with Xfce's migration to meson as the build system in the master branch, sound support is automatic if libcanberra is installed prior to build.
Edit: I've updated the Xfce documentation to indicate that it is supported.
