Update 04/02/2026 at 11:49 AM
I have done a lot of searching around online, and it seems that trying to fix this is either not possible, or not worth the effort.
Update 04/02/2026
I recently learned that my printer icon isn't small, it is not showing up at all. When I first start printing, all I get in a little red minus sign. After the printer gets done printing then a little printer icon shows up briefly. I tried a bunch of different icon themes and that didn't solve it. Even tried a different install of Linux Mint 22.3 XFCE today, and installed the printer drivers. Same problem on that system too!

Why is my printer status icon so small that I can't see it? You can see the minus sign but no printer Icon. I'm trying to figure out why, and why is it so small?
Distro Linux Mint 22.3
Panel Version 4.18.4
I think the thing I am having trouble with is
xfce4-xapp-status-plugin 0.4.4+zena
In the Panel Preferences it is called:
Status Tray Plugin (external)
I tried playing around with the settings in it but nothing seems to effect the printer icon. But where the printer is supposed to be, I get a little negative sign.

Another weird thing is, right after the printer gets done printing a little printer icon shows up, then goes away.
I tried different ICON packs, but I keep getting the same result. You can't see a printer on the panel when it is printing.

Assuming that this is system-config-printer-applet.....
Go to the Status Tray Plugin properties and make sure that "Adjust size automatically" is unchecked, then tweak the "Fixed Icon Size" setting to make the icon the size you want.

This is not the problem. It wasn't until I saw what it was doing with simple screen recorder that I realized it was not a size problem.
