Monitor brightness control in tray xfce4-ddc-brightness-slider

Hello everyone,

I’d like to share a small utility I’ve been working on:

https://github.com/krsnv/xfce4-ddc-brightness-slider

xfce4-ddc-brightness-slider is a lightweight brightness control tool for external monitors using DDC/CI, designed specifically for Xfce.

What it does

It allows you to control the brightness of external displays directly from Xfce, without touching the monitor’s hardware buttons.

The project integrates with the Xfce panel and provides a simple brightness slider for DDC/CI-compatible monitors.

Why this project

While laptop backlight control is well supported, adjusting brightness on external monitors is often inconvenient. Most solutions are either desktop-agnostic scripts or generic tools that don’t integrate cleanly with Xfce.

This project aims to provide:

  • Native-feeling integration with Xfce

  • Simple and minimal interface

  • Reliable DDC/CI-based brightness control

  • No unnecessary dependencies

Requirements

  • A monitor that supports DDC/CI

  • ddcutil

  • Proper permissions to access I2C devices

Current status

The project is actively developed. Feedback, testing, and contributions are welcome.

If you have suggestions, bug reports, or ideas for improvements, feel free to open an issue or contribute via pull requests.

Thanks for your time, and I hope this tool is useful to other Xfce users.
