Can We Please have a better way to create an avatar for this site?

I think it is kinda sad that the avatar feature on this site hasn't worked right for sometime.  Maybe even years!   I have seen it recommended that we use gravatar to make our avatar for here.  I once had a gravatar account and couldn't remember why.  Then when I saw it recommended to a user here, that is probably why I signed up for it.  I learned that my email address was leaked out from gravatar.  So I don't want to try creating a new account with them again!

What Happened
In October 2020, a security researcher published a technique for scraping large volumes of data from Gravatar, the service for providing globally unique avatars . 167 million names, usernames and MD5 hashes of email addresses used to reference users' avatars were subsequently scraped and distributed within the hacking community. 114 million of the MD5 hashes were cracked and distributed alongside the source hash, thus disclosing the original email address and accompanying data. Following the impacted email addresses being searchable in HIBP, Gravatar release an FAQ detailing the incident.

I can see no reason why a simple picture file like this one couldn't be uploaded directly to this site.

What is so weird about this is, according to my profile it does upload, but it doesn't show in any of my posts. 

The image I am showing you is only 60X60 pixels, and it is only 7.3 Kibs.  Before you ask, I have tried png too.

I don't understand what gravatar does differently.

This is out of the moderator's hands. There is an existing bug report about this. Feel free to post your comments there to bring it to the developer's attention.

This is out of the moderator's hands. There is an existing bug report about this. Feel free to post your comments there to bring it to the developer's attention.
