I need help with understanding how to customize/make my own themes

Im new to linux and ive seen already made themes by others cause i wanted to customize my desktop. Though nothing seems to fit with what i have in mind and i also wanna experiment with my computer and make my own theme. I saw that modifying an already existing theme is a wise start, can anyone help me with guidance about this?
