xfdesktop crashing

Every once in a while, my CPU usage goes through the roof, and my desktop stops responding, or even redrawing (any windows are left drawn on there, even when I switch to an empty desktop).

It seems when this happens, my .xsession-errors fills up with lines like this:

** (xfdesktop:79074): CRITICAL **: 16:25:21.074: xfdesktop_icon_view_item_in_grid_slot: assertion 'row >= 0 && row < icon_view->nrows' failed

(.xsession-errors is currently 32GB after running for five days!)

Any ideas what might be causing this? I just tried removing most of the icons that were on my desktop to see if that helps, since it does seem to have something to do with the positioning of them.. but I won't know for a while whether it has done any good, since the problem seems to arise at random, usually only after a few days.

Re: xfdesktop crashing

Which distro and version of xfdesktop are you running?

It might be a corrupted icons file. Try this:

  1. Stop the xfdesktop process:

    xfdesktop --quit
  2. Delete any "icons.*" files in the ~/.config/xfce4/desktop folder

  3. Start xfdesktop:

    xfdesktop &

Are you using multiple screens of different resolutions and switching among them?
