Original Title:
Help to compile older Parole Media Player version: Downgrade to 1.0.5
Solution generously provided by ToZ here.
Just mind that the version in question is this one (1.0.5-1).
Other differences observed:
equivs built libxfce4util6_4.9.0_all.deb instead of libxfce4util6_1.0_all.deb,
and libxfconf-0-2_4.6.0_all.deb instead of libxfconf-0-2_1.0_all.deb,
but neither has any sort of impact on the outcome. It's just different names representing the versions they are.
Everything's OK!
UPDATE:
I was dumb and didn't have gstreamer installed… well, now autogen.sh did things properly and running gmake worked.
However, Parole doesn't work, running the binary from the src folder results in:
free(): invalid pointer
Aborted (core dumped)
Skimming the compiler output yields no errors.
Any ideas what's up? This release should technically work, at least it used to on older releases and I figure with a package conflict it wouldn't have compiled.
And I should read more carefully, heatwave or not.
Original Post:
Some optional background / trivia on the motivation for doing this:
▼'Story of my life'
I main Parole for the quick use because of its simplicity and came to like it. Now, for a while. I've tried to be friends with the new floating playlist 4.18 has, but it's impossible to have it visible and watch a video or have shortcut control over your stream/video/audio. It simply steals it, closes the playlist and only then you can do it. I see no option to have it open at all times without focus theft. Furthermore it's not automatically readjusting the video or visualiser aspect ratio as before, obscuring the image (nevermind my dislike of current floating rounded corners trends just putting me off).
In UX, as someone who used Parole regularly, I find those changes to have been a step back from its gradual improvement resulting in more clicks, obscuring of the media and inability to see your playlist while controlling your software, which I consider a big no-no for a media player to do.
This is why I want to regress to an older version.
Unfortunately, there's no release binaries of those, so compiling is the only option.
I still got those other matters of mine with the Window Buttons plugin to deal with and reports and requests to write (to conclude it), but before I dive back into it, I wanted to see if it is even any remotely reasonable idea to regress software that currently doesn't behave how I need it to behave.
Main takeaway: I want to use an older release as a test.
I downloaded the tar.gz of the source of 1.0.5, being the last I remember to behave the way I expect it to, as a test to see if I can even get as far as I want to from here: https://gitlab.xfce.org/apps/parole/-/t … _type=tags
Installed the xfce4 dev tools, cmake, build-essential, automake, checkinstall and so on.
I was sure I installed all necessary dependencies… but I still must be doing something wrong or maybe I miss something.
What I did:
I ran autogen.sh, output I got:
mkdir: cannot create directory ‘m4’: File exists
xdt-autogen: You must have "gtk-doc" installed.
Download the appropriate package for your distribution,
or get the source tarball at https://www.gtk.org.
So I installed the GTK doc package, ran it again and autogen did stuff.
There is a Makefile.am (came with the archive), and after running autogen.sh and configure, a Makefile.in too.
But running make in the parole-parole-1.0.5 directory results in:
make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.
So I tried make -f Makefile.am, which did something… but I see nothing other than:
Means something concluded and cache got deleted. But I'm none the wiser because I see no binaries or alike.
Checked make's help but not seeing any verbosity flag which could help figure out what's up, or I'm just cooked by the warm weather we got and miss it.
Running with Makefile.in ended in:
Makefile.in:15: *** missing separator. Stop.
Quick check, the contents it complains about are this line: @SET_MAKE@
Full makefile in spoiler.

Help is appreciated, especially a step by step to get a grasp of what I may have omitted or done wrong!
As you can see I'm just shooting blindly at anything I can think of in trying to figure out the process. I did read docs, but most refer to using meson, or if about Parole, compiling a newer version of Parole, or I lack the last bit of information for me to get it and then there's also very "none"-answers situations (think "why would you even do that").
As a reminder, I'm on Xubuntu 24.04, xfce4.18, all software is up to date (if that matters).
Note:
The last time I compiled C software on Xubuntu was on 16.04 I think, which was a regression of GIMP after they introduced the top image tab being visible by default, so feel free to explain the process like I'm 5, I'm not going to be mad being treated like an idiot because I sure don't remember much other than "go into directory, make, wait, done", but clearly it's either not that easy if I fail at doing just that, or I'm not seeing the obvious.
PS: Very dumb question, but it's not possible to just use the parole binary from /bin/ of an older OS version, is it? I rather ask this before I try stupid stuff and mess something up.
