[SOLVED] Issues with custom thumbnail rendering for xcursor files

I'm trying to get Thunar to show me thumbnails for xcursor files. I tried the solution recommended in this thread, but it doesn't seem to be working properly as I'm only getting the generic image icon.

Interestingly, if I open a folder with an icon that I've previously opened in GIMP, it will properly render a thumbnail - for a fraction of a second before the generic image icon seemingly overrides it.

OS: CachyOS
XFCE version: 4.20

SOLVED

TL;DR If you're having the same issue I'm having, try making the thumbnailer target x-xcursor files in addition to (or instead of) xcursor files. Additionally, if you have a default application marked for xcursor files, reset it to default. One or either of these should fix the issue.

Try running tumbler in debug mode to see if it catches anything:

• close thunar

• kill the existing tumblerd process:

  pkill tumblerd

• run tumberld in debug mode:

  G_MESSAGES_PREFIXED= G_MESSAGES_DEBUG=all /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/tumbler-1/tumblerd

• open thunar to the directory with xcursors and see what the logs say

Feel free to post back the debug outputs of tumblerd.

I had both xcur2png installed and the script marked executable. I didn't have graphicsmagick installed, just imagemagick, but installing it didn't fix the issue.

I tried running it in debug mode. The service was in a different place than in the command (/usr/lib/tumbler-1/tumblerd) but it otherwise worked fine? Here's what it recorded:

Didn't throw any errors that I saw, but it didn't report anything on moving to the cursors folder either.

That's not right.

Can you post back the output of the following commands:

stat /usr/local/bin/xcursorthumbs
xdg-mime query filetype CURSORFILE

...where CURSORFILE is the path and name of an actual cursor file for which the thumbnail isn't showing up.

After getting that second result, I created another thumbnailer to do the same thing to that file type (thinking maybe it was just a name thing), but no change occurred. And checking the debug log again, there was once again no response from it.

Strange.

As a sanity check, can you post the contents of your /usr/share/thumbnailers/xcursor.thumbnailer and /usr/local/bin/xcursorthumbs files?

And try running that script in debug mode to see exactly what's happening:

bash -x xcursorthumbs PATH/TO/CURSOR/FILE . 64

...change PATH/TO/CURSORFILE to point to and actual cursor file. The output, if it works, should show up in your current directory (make sure you can write to it).

Okay, I figured out the issue. Because I had previously used GIMP to open the xcursor files, it was overriding the thumbnails with its own thumbnails. I reset the Default Application and the thumbnails started showing up.

I had tried this before, but at the time the thumbnailer was targeting xcursor instead of x-xcursor, so it didn't change anything.
