Hard Drives Not Showing In Thunar Without Reboot

I opened Thunar in Debian 12 and Xfce 4.18, and my extra internal hard drives (4) did not show up on the left pane as they have for years.  Had to reboot and then they were back, being displayed as they always were.

Does anyone know why this might have occurred?  I've seen a lot of odd behavior from flawed software and hardware, but this one is baffling to me.

While they did not show in thunar, you should have verified their existence in /dev/disk. If they were not there, as I suspect, then there was a hardware error. But now we don't know for sure.

Yep, afraid that is so.  Didn't think about that command.  Would be nice if there were a GUI for it.

Well, depends on how you consider things, there can be.

Since I mount all auxiliary drives with systemd-mount declarations in ~/.profile I see their status scroll by at logon. Next, I use a genmon that checks mount status on click of all those drive and echos their status in a desktop notification using notify-send. In this case I'm watching automount status.

It just happened again.  When I booted up the system and logged into the desktop, I noticed that there were no drive icons on the desktop.  So I looked in /dev/disk.  I found that they are listed there under /by-id and by-label, etc..  However, there are little red padlock icons next to their line items.

Evidently, they are not being logged into automatically.  And so, of course, they do not appear in Thundar under +Other locations.

Have your settings changed?
Check Settings>Desktop tab File/Launcher Icons, Devices
Check Settings>Thunar Preferences tab Advanced, Volume Management

They should appear in the Devices section of the left pane. Are you using an old version? I don't have an 'Other' section

I have made no changes at all.

I have no such settings options as you listed them.

Is gvfs installed and aktiv?

gvfs = yes
aktiv = no

This morning's boot up automatically loaded the drives.  Go figure.
