Hard Drives Not Showing In Thunar Without Reboot

I opened Thunar in Debian 12 and Xfce 4.18, and my extra internal hard drives (4) did not show up on the left pane as they have for years. Had to reboot and then they were back, being displayed as they always were.

Does anyone know why this might have occurred? I've seen a lot of odd behavior from flawed software and hardware, but this one is baffling to me.

While they did not show in thunar, you should have verified their existence in /dev/disk. If they were not there, as I suspect, then there was a hardware error. But now we don't know for sure.

Well, depends on how you consider things, there can be.

Since I mount all auxiliary drives with systemd-mount declarations in ~/.profile I see their status scroll by at logon. Next, I use a genmon that checks mount status on click of all those drive and echos their status in a desktop notification using notify-send. In this case I'm watching automount status.

It just happened again. When I booted up the system and logged into the desktop, I noticed that there were no drive icons on the desktop. So I looked in /dev/disk. I found that they are listed there under /by-id and by-label, etc.. However, there are little red padlock icons next to their line items.

Evidently, they are not being logged into automatically. And so, of course, they do not appear in Thundar under +Other locations.

Have your settings changed?
Check Settings>Desktop tab File/Launcher Icons, Devices
Check Settings>Thunar Preferences tab Advanced, Volume Management

They should appear in the Devices section of the left pane. Are you using an old version? I don't have an 'Other' section

I have made no changes at all.

Well, it happened again this morning. There are no drive icons on the desktop, nor do they appear in Thunar. However, Disks shows them all mounted, and Thunar shows them existing under File System (/mnt). Programs are able to access their information from them as if they are active, so that is good. It is just an odd thing that the desktop and Thunar icons do not display. If they are not on the desktop, and in that environment, I can understand that they would not appear under "Other locations" in Thunar since Thunar depends upon the desktop environment. So it appears to be an Xfce environmental issue, perhaps having to do with the timing of the boot up process. Perhaps something is out of order and comes into play before something else is ready. But who knows. This is not a debilitating issue anyway; just one of convenience. Maybe it means something to the programmers.

I can access the drives in Thunar by going into Computer and then /mnt. They are listed there by a unique ID number, and are individually accessible. But it is a bit of a bother to not be able to see them standing alone as icons on the desktop or by name in Thunar.

Anyone have experience with this sort of issue?

When the drives are displayed on the desktop/thunar, run this command:

gio mount -l

Then the next time they don't show up, run the same command and compare outputs.

Additionally, when they don't show up, run these commands in order to see if you can get them to show up again:

xfdesktop -Q
xfdesktop &
thunar -q
thunar &
xfdesktop -Q
xfdesktop &

...and see if they show up after any of these commands.

Finally, when they don't show up, can you also post back:

journalctl --user -b 0 --no-pager

Then I noticed that it did the same thing for my internal hard drive named "Spare". (You should see it in the previous pasted report. It is the one usually mounted under /media, instead of /mnt, for some odd reason.)

I wonder if this is also related or another problem entirely.

Interestingly, while Thunar could not mount it, Disks was able to do so and back to its /media location.

Check both /media and /mnt for orphaned entries and delete them.
If there are entries without a device, they will challenge new entries. Usually the mount point is cleaned up at umount. Some error may leave a lingering mount point with no device.

Yes, that works. To delete any files you'd need to use a root thunar, 'pkexec thunar'

(Note the 25 second delay between entries).

Potentially a race condition of some kind? When the drives are not showing up and "gio mount -l" gives you this warning, can you try:

systemctl --user restart gvfs-udisks2-volume-monitor.service

...and try once more:

gio mount -l

...to make sure the warning is gone.

Does this make the drives appear?
