Any ideas about how I can add a shutdown sound?

a bit cheap, but you could add a line with play /path/to/soundfile.wav to your /etc/xdg/xfce4/xinitrc before this scripts completly exits.

Thanks. 'Sorry for taking so long to reply. I may try that method in future, but for now I've discovered that the BIOS plays a little midi notification for us that's just fine.
BTW 'Trying out Xubuntu 6.06.1 now.

Hi, I installed Xubuntu 6 days ago. Can you tell me where do I find this file called BIOS? I'd like to use the midi notification. Thank you.

I think he was referring to his BIOS/CMOS on his motherboard? Either way this topic is several years old and the member is probably long gone, you could try libcanberra... it produces action/event sounds for GTK.

Please, help me. Forgive my ignorance, I'm new with this. I downloaded libcanberra, but I don't know how to install it. Can somebody tell me the steps I have to take? Thank you.

The package should be available from your Distro package manager, install it via that and you should have some Sound Settings. I don't recall exactly where, but it may be under Window Manager Settings or WM Tweaks.

I did everything, downloaded and installed it via Distro package manager, but I don't find the Sound Settings anywhere. They aren't under Window Manager Settings or WM Tweaks, I've been looking for them everywhere. Oh, and I found some sound settings on "Appearance" and checked "enable event sounds" but it doesn't work.

Hrm, that should be correct then (Enable Sound Events). Check the home page for more info on using it or what for someone else to chime in, I don't use sound events
