I have Debian Etch installed with xfce 4.3.99.1 and everything works perfectly. Maybe the unstable version has a bug.
Good luck, jimbo

I have the same problem. I was running Etch, but getting xfce from os-works. I decided to change to using the Debian xfce. I ran dist-upgrade.
Now I have lost my background, right-click on the desktop does nothing, and there is no menu on my taskbar.
I am sure it is a small problem, just apt-get install something, but what something am I missing?

The menu works I have a desktop just not the program to change the background :-(
did I post in the wrong forum?

have you got "/usr/lib/xfce4/mcs-plugins/backdrop_settings.so" ?
this is the mcs plugin that controls the desktop settings.
if you do not have some thing is wrong with the install, and you will have to reinstall xfce.

yeah I have it

I've just encountered the same setting after rebooting on Gentoo.
No wallpaper, and when I go to the Desktop Settings I get the dialog saying..
'Xfce Settings Manager error: No such plugin "backdrop"'
Also I can no longer right-click (menu) or middle-click (list desktop and apps) with the mouse on the desktop.
I re-emerged xfce-mcs-manager xfce4-mcs-plugins and libxfce4mcs but this has made no difference whatsoever.
Running xfdesktop from the command line gives...
$ xfdesktop
xfdesktop: error while loading shared libraries: libmd5.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
A little searching suggests that this file belongs to libwww and is required by exo (see listing at http://tinderbox.dev.gentoo.org/html/de … .3.2.html). However emerging libwww has no effect :-(
Can anyone suggest how to resolve this issue?

Hmmm, now why didn't I think of trying that first :?
Reinstalling xfdesktop sorted out the problem. Thanks for reminding me of the obvious

I have exactly the same problem :-| I'm using Debian.
I did reinstall Xfce, but it doesn't help at all.
What are you suggest? (Xfce version 4.3.99.2)
Offline
Ask you distro to upgrade to 4.4.1 or 4.4.2 and recompile xfdesktop.

My distro have no access to newer Xfce versions. Is there any repository contains new Xfce so I could put it to my sources.list?
Offline
You could use the repro from the debian testing group: http://www.xfce.org/download/
