I have installed Xubuntu on my (very) old notebook computer ummm.... twice. The first time, it started out fine. But of course, being who I am, I had to tweak the look and feel of it, and I liked the result quite a bit. However, somewhere in all this setting-changing I had managed to hide the (I cannot remember the word for it, so I'll improvise) ...things on the taskbar that show what windows you have open. When you minimize a window, you either minimize to these "things" or to the system tray. Now, whenever I minimize a window, I may as well have closed it, because the aforementioned "things" are gone. Disappeared. I seem to remember some kind of window grouping setting I changed, but, despite hours and hours poured into the frantic... hmmm... perhaps not frantic, I am not a frantic type of person - hours poured into the focused searching for these options. Alas, I could not find them. It ended up with a complete reinstall, but Woe! the "things" are still not there! So... how, exactly, do I go about fixing this? Any suggestions?
PS
I saw a... guide, of sorts, concerning how to bind the windows key to the start menu, but, being new to both Linux and to the Xfce desktop environment, I did not understand a word of it. Well, not literally, but anyhow. An explanation would be... welcome.

First of all remember ALT+TAB this will show a list of programs running.
Now for your problem, right click a panel and add a Task List, this is what you're missing.
If you need to add a new panel, you can right click an existing one and choose customise panel, then click the big + sign.

You can also add an iconbox if those are the "things" you're referring to.
Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes
That way, if they get angry, they're a mile away and barefoot

Now if the icon box could be more OSX-ish and have launchers/iconified windows that would be awesome.

Task List seems to have been what was missing. Thank you very much for your assistance, it is *much* appreciated. A taskbar without Task List is like... a computer without internet. (Which, incidentally, is exactly the case with the computer Xubuntu is on. It only has a modem, and it's very old, so... what the heck. I have another one with internet connection anyhow)
Did I, by the way, say thank you?

You know, it's moments like this that make it all worthwhile.
I am so glad you've got it working, and you've fixed a problem.
