I've tried installing XFCE on my Kubuntu laptop. However when I boot to XFCE all I get is a blank screen. Alt-F4 will allow me to exit.
It should be obvious I don't know what I'm doing so simple advice would be welcomed.

I've been having the same problem, too. Does the fact that I'm using Edgy make any difference?

Check if you got a .gtkrc or .gtkrc2.0 file among your config files in your home directory. If that's the case remove them and try to start Xfce4 again.
I'm not sure that .gtkrc2.0 conflicts with Xfce4 but .gtkrc surely does.
