dell multimedia keyboard, volume knob

i have a round volume knob on my dell multimedia keyboard that worked in gnome by default but does not work in xfce by default.  xfcewiki says . . .

To determine keycodes of the multimedia keys use the program xev. Create a .Xmodmap file in your $HOME directory containing those keycodes and assign keysyms to them.

is this what i need to do or is there a quick fix for getting the volume knob to work?
