thunar hangs "loading folder contents"

For some reason the first time I go to a directrory I haven't with thunar it just sits there "loaoding folder contents" sometimes this is a few seconds, sometimes it is minutes and I have to stop it. The funny thing is I know the directory has 5 files in it(with really long file names, which is why I want to use thunar :-) )
Sometimes it never succeeds leaving me with directories I can't get to.

The strange part is that while "waiting" the cpu is idle, like waiting for hardware? What gives?
