[solved] Synaptic problem

Hi,

I'm having a problem with the Synaptic package manager on my Xubuntu Dapper subnotebook: When I click the "Reload" button, I get an error message saying a couple of sources - which are listed in the message - could not be loaded, might not be available anymore or whatever. When I search for a specific package, the system almost never finds it.
I checked my /etc/apt/sources.list and found most sources commented out and some still displaying breezy. So I uncommented them all and changed the remaining ones to dapper.
However, next time I clicked the "Reload" button, it was exactly the same. And when I was copying my sources.list to a text file for posting it here, I realized that my changes had not been written to the file. How come? I opened the file with sudo, so I should have been root, no?
For background, I've copied my /etc/apt/sources.list and I'll post it here:

Okay, now the problem is a little bit different: I finally managed to change all the sources.list entries and I could reload and even find some stuff I was looking for. But when I clicked on "apply" I got a message reading "The following problems were found on your system". There was a list of items which I post here:

Can anybody tell me why "archive.ubuntu.com" can't be resolved anymore? Is it a temporary server problem or have they moved the whole thing? If so, what is it now and how do I have to adapt my /etc/apt/sources.list?
Thanks a lot!

Re: [solved] Synaptic problem

Hello?
If there's anybody here, I'd really appreciate some help with this. As long as my synaptic is not in order, I can't install stuff, so I cannot make a serious working tool out of my Xubuntu subnotebook. I'm also planning to turn back to KDE to make it consistent with my Desktop, but to that end, I also have to install packages.
Now, I tried to just replace the contents of the /etc/apt/sources.list on the notebook with the file from my desktop - I'm running Kubuntu there, but the base system should be the same. However, the story is the same: When updating, I get an error message saying basically that quite a number of the sources could not be resolved. I don't have any problem whatsoever on my Desktop. I updated all the sources just now just for testing and it's fine.
Thanks a lot!

Re: [solved] Synaptic problem

You're having a problem with *buntu, not XFCE.  You'd be better off asking your question at http://ubuntuforums.org/.  Not that there aren't *buntu users here that may be able to help, but you're likely to get a much faster response in the *buntu forums.  If you what even more instant gratification try the #ubuntu channel at Freenode.  There's 1090 people there right now!

Re: [solved] Synaptic problem

Hi all,

I've posted this problem in several other forums, but up to now, no one was able to help - in fact, I haven't yet got any answers at all to this. So if there's anybody here who might be able to help, I'd really appreciate that.
Thanks a lot!

Try to replace your /etc/apt/sources.list with this:

deb-src http://no.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper main restricted

Re: [solved] Synaptic problem

Thank you very much, jellybean!
I'll try that out immediately.
That problem is really getting on my nerves. If this doesn't work, I'll probably just forget about the upgrade and install Edgy from USB, I'm sure that can be done. But let's see...

[a bit later]
Sorry, jellybean - no difference whatsoever. Same error message listing more or less all of the sources, all with "Temporary failure resolving [source]". Very strange, in the beginning it worked fine - that's how I did the upgrade from Breezy to Dapper and installed Xfce.

I think I'll change tack now and look for a way to get Edgy installed from USB - my external cdrom is not bootable.

Re: [solved] Synaptic problem

Hi,

@jellybean
in the meantime I found out the reason might in fact be that somehow I cannot activate my ethernet connection anymore, I didn't think of that possibility. It worked in the beginning. I have a wifi router in the hall, but it also has several cable sockets, so I plug my subnotebook in one of those. I don't know for sure if it's supposed to be static or DHCP then, I'll try with static, using the router's data that I can get from the control center on my Desktop, since DHCP doesn't seem to work.
My /etc/network/interfaces seems to be a little mixed up, too. Let's see, said the blind man...

@Nick
see my last post prior to yours ;-)

Re: [solved] Synaptic problem

Hi,

it seems to work out. Yesterday my router went down while I was downloading some stuff via Synaptic. I hope there's no irreparable damage done. Last thing before that, I was still getting "resolving" error messages for
- security.ubuntu.com and
- archive.ubuntu.com
but apart from that, it seemed to be fine. We'll see now.
