battery plugin problem in debian etch

I recently install etch from the xfce cd1 in a compaq 1692 (1999 laptop), it install me a working xfce desktop, all work ok and fast but the battery plugin doesnt work, it indicate 0% all the time. I have installed in other partition xubuntu 7.04 and on it work ok (in dapper and edgy yet) but xubuntu is so slowly that i wana to try with Debian etch, and it is actually faster than ubuntu but the battery problem is very important to me because i use the laptop unplug all the time and as hibernate dont work i need to know the battery state to plugit or to shutdown.
If somebody can help me i will be very thankfull.
thks

bye

Re: battery plugin problem in debian etch

What does the kernel report for the current battery status (should be in /proc/acpi/...). If there is no battery folder/status you might need to load the battery module (if it's not compiled in the kernel image). Also check dmesg if the kernel recognized the battery.

Re: battery plugin problem in debian etch

there is no file inside the /proc/battery folder, and the battery module is loaded (yes is in the kernel image), and i try to use dmesg but the command doesnot exist, what other command can i use? Anyway i understand that the problem is no xfce plugin, is the kernel. But if you can helpme i would be thankful.

Re: battery plugin problem in debian etch

Well the folder should be /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0, or at least that's the one on my laptop... You can also check the battery status with hal (if you have the hal daemon running): lshal | grep battery
