Window composite crash

Hello everybody, i'm trying to set up transparency in my xfce (xubuntu 7,04). I go to the window manager tweaks and click on tab called compositor. Check 'enable display compositing', and as soon as I click 'enable', xfce crashes... why is it happening?

/etc/X11/xorg.conf

Section "Extensions"
    Option "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier    "Intel Corporation 82810E DC-133 CGC [Chipset Graphics Controller]"
    Driver        "i810"
    BusID        "PCI:0:1:0"
EndSection

Re: Window composite crash

Any warning printed in the xorg log? Using the latest intel driver?

Re: Window composite crash

where is this log file located? I can't find it

xubuntu recognised my video board, so I guess it's using the lastest intel driver... and this is an old video board, there might not be a new driver anyway

Re: Window composite crash

/var/log/Xorg.0.log. Search for EE and WW stuff.

Re: Window composite crash

The font warnings are not a big problem, they're just defined in your xorg.conf but are not really font paths (or you need to run mkfontdir <path>, duno).

The MHz warnings are results of a misconfigured screen/display section in your xorg.conf. Try to find the good refresh rates for this screen (HorizSync   30 - 71 and VertRefresh 50 - 160) or remove the refresh rates at all.

The xf86AllocateGARTMemory warnings are driver warnings, for what i've read those should be fixed in the 1.6.6 release.

The last line is the reason xorg crashes, you try to use DRI on you video board, but it does not support this feature. Remove the DRI lines from your xorg.conf and it should atleast start...

Re: Window composite crash

I use xubuntu and have the i810 graphics also, DRI works [almost] out of the box w/ xubuntu 7.04 which is totally amazing since it is tricky to set up, the only thing is,   DRI on the i810 only works in 16 bit color mode, you need to edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf and change  the bit depth from 24 to 16, then  reboot X and turn composite on and it should work fine.  And if you don't do that some things will not render correctly, like some progress bars and stuff.
