how to enable xfce4 at startup ?

Under ubuntu hardy heron/gnome and using the xfce-session-show command, I checked the "enable xfce to manage desktop" - option, and then xfce4 works fine, so I decided to keep it. I did not see any option anywhere to save my settings.

But when I restart X11 (Ctrl-Alt-Backspace), xfce isn't running any more (I use gnome/gdm).

So my question is, what way or how to tell xfce4 (4.2)  to run as default desktop manager after the next restart of X11 ?

Re: how to enable xfce4 at startup ?

I don't use ubuntu - use mandriva - that said.  I "fixed" this issue by selecting xfce in the login screen.   Logout and look at the various buttons.
One of them is the various window environment/manager and I selected xfce as default.  Does this work for you?  If not, I'm stumped.

p.s. I'm not sure if mandriva uses gdm.

Works; great, thanks.

As a new user of xfce, I am afraid that I have to ask some other rather stupid questions. For instance, how do I select a different theme ?

Again, I don't know how ubuntu works - using Mandriva.  Can you find the setting manager?  Then look around.  My setting manager is in the menu under "setting".
You'll have to find it - I'll be surprised if you see nothing.
