Is there any way to allow window resizing from the top border?

Hi,

Many other window managers -- e.g. GNOME, KDE, Microsoft Windows -- allow resizing windows from the top border. However the XFCE window manager doesn't. Windows can only be resized by dragging another window edge (or corner).

Is there any way to activate/allow/enable resizing from the top window border in XFCE?

Not quite an answer to your question, but you can resize a window from any interior point by pressing Alt + right mouse button and then drag.

Alt + right mouse moves the window, not resizes it.

p.s. I end up moving the window, then resize it from the bottom - the
reason why I'm also interested in the solution.

On the Phoronix website there's a somewhat informative review of the forthcoming Xfce 4.6 release:

http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=a … lpha&num=1

Of the list of changes identified and specfically noted is:

The window manager for Xfce, xfwm4, hasn't received any major changes in this first alpha build other than a handful of fixes and the ability to resize a window from the top.

which should provide some partial closure to your quest for a "top" solution...

Alt + left mouse button moves the window, Alt + right button resizes. At least, that's the behavior on my system.

Hmmm.  Alt + left mouse does nothing.  There probably a setting somewhere.  What distro do you have?  I have Mandriva/XFCE.

I use CRUX and I don't have any settings tool besides what comes with Xfce. You might want to check the settings for Window Manager, Window Manager Tweaks and Mouse. If you have the mouse set up for a left-handed, then of course the left and right buttons switch places.

Does the left mouse button work for other tasks?

Where can I find the setting to change window resize from ALT + right mouse button to ALT + middle mouse button?

I'm not sure what problem the original poster was having, because I can resize from the top border just fine?

As for the Alt thing, I only see the option to change Alt itself in Window Manager Tweaks, not the buttons that match with it.

Re: Is there any way to allow window resizing from the top border?

@zerker:

The mention in the post by RGRagosta that the problem, according to Phoronix, would be fixed in the upcoming XFCE 4.6, as well as the fact the post was in 2008, suggests the original poster was using XFCE 4.4 or earlier, before XFCE allowed resizing windows from the top.

It would be surprising if you're not using 4.6 or later, so it wouldn't be expected you'd come across the resizing from the top problem.  Similarly, while I don't have a copy of XFCE 4.4 around, I'd expect the settings in Window Manager Tweaks to have evolved since 2008.

Ah. Didn't notice that Vikstar had resurrected an old thread.
