Unable to Access Panel from Desktop & Settings Manager

I am running Xfce 4 Desktop Environment version 4.4.2 on Xubuntu Intrepid and can no longer access my panel from the desktop.  Moreover, accessing via settings manager does not work.  Any help, ideas, suggestions, etc. would be appreciated.

I recently added WICD and am wondering if this mucked things up.

Determined that xfce4-panel could run from the command line and then added to Autostarted Applications.  This has resolved the problem, though not sure if there is a better solution.
