I have the same problem. I use the 1024 x 768 x 100 Hz display mode, and have the apropriate mode line in xorg.conf. It worked well in Xfce 4.4.x. But after upgrading to Xfce 4.6.0, mode is always set to 1024 x 768 x 85 Hz after startup. It can be changed to 100 Hz in new Settings/Display dialog, and it work well. I save it, but the next time I start Xfce, it is back to 85 Hz. I installed Xfce 4.6.1, but the problem remained.
My video card is ATI Radeon 9000, and I use Slamd64 distro.

Re: xfce4.6 display setting not saving resolution

I had this problem with the first beta (Display dialogue did nothing at all). I got around it by creating an autostart entry for xrandr, with the appropriate arguments.

Re: xfce4.6 display setting not saving resolution

thx for your help!
i tried with "Session and Sturtup" app but the new item was NOT loaded in autorun.
i opened .config/autostart/my_item
and Exec was different from your
Exec = $ xrandr --output VGA-0 --mode 1280x1024 --rate 75
so i modified the Exec like:
Exec="xrandr --output VGA-0 --mode 1280x1024 --rate 75"
and finally it works!!

so... looking for a bug i discovered another bug?! what about Exec !?

Re: xfce4.6 display setting not saving resolution

Thank you for this. I was getting SO bugged with my resolution not setting properly after a restart.
I had set the display settings, altered xorg.conf, nothing worked.
This is the only one that has.

Obviously, this is a bug because you should be able to set it in the Display dialogue and it should stick.
Any ideas why this is not happening?
Is there a launchpad bug report?

Re: xfce4.6 display setting not saving resolution

There was a bug in 4.6.0, iirc it was fixed in 4.6.1

Re: xfce4.6 display setting not saving resolution

Sorry, but I have the latest (4.6.1) and it isn't fixed.  Anyone have any ideas how to fix it?

Thanks.

In xorg.conf, "Display Subsection", add Virtual xdim ydim, then start Xorg.

Re: xfce4.6 display setting not saving resolution

One way I found to save the preferred display resolution is to edit my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and specify the correct order of resolutions under the Screen section, with your preferred resolution listed first in each sub-section's mode line (each can be different).  That way it will always come up as the first choice and yet still allow the Display applet to list all other options as alternatives to be selected at any time while in your desktop environment.

Hope that helps.  smile

Please see my post.  You may have the same issue.
http://forum.xfce.org/index.php?topic=5189.0

I don't think this is an Xfce thing for you.  It's more of a general bug that can be fixed by a very specific setting in xorg.conf regarding your horizontal sync rate.  I think that the reason your previous playing around with xorg.conf didn't work must have something to do with an auto-configuration that takes over when xorg.conf doesn't jive with your hardware.
