Hi,
Please be gentle with me, it's my first time using and customising Xfce
I've read through several forum posts on customizing the Applications menu in Xfce and also the Wiki info on this subject (found here: http://wiki.xfce.org/howto/customize-menu). But it just won't work as expected... below are the steps taken:
* Logged on as the freshly added user 'guest'.
* created the dir: mkdir /home/guest/.config/menus
* copied the menu file: cp /etc/xdg/menus/xfce-applications.menu /home/guest/.config/menus/
* edited the menu file so it reads (trying to remove 'settings' and 'system' menu items) :
<!DOCTYPE Menu PUBLIC "-//freedesktop//DTD Menu 1.0//EN"
"http://www.freedesktop.org/standards/menu-spec/1.0/menu.dtd">

But no joy. I've been fiddling with it for a few hours now, but can't seem to get it right. If someone got some pointers i would be really grateful.
Thanx!

Hi
Try with this one:
<!DOCTYPE Menu PUBLIC "-//freedesktop//DTD Menu 1.0//EN"
"http://www.freedesktop.org/standards/menu-spec/1.0/menu.dtd">
<Menu>
<Name>Xfce</Name>

<DefaultDirectoryDirs/>
<Include>
<Category>X-Xfce-Toplevel</Category>
</Include>
<Layout>
<Filename>xfce4-run-program.desktop</Filename>
<Separator/>
<Filename>xfce4-term.desktop</Filename>
<Filename>xfce4-file-manager.desktop</Filename>
<Filename>xfce4-web-browser.desktop</Filename>
<Separator/>
<Merge type="all"/>
<Separator/>
<Filename>xfce4-help.desktop</Filename>
<Filename>xfce4-about-xfce.desktop</Filename>
<Filename>xfce4-logout.desktop</Filename>
</Layout>
<Menu>
<Name>Accessories</Name>
<Directory>xfce-accessories.directory</Directory>
<Include>
<Or>
<Category>Accessibility</Category>
<Category>Core</Category>

You must not remove "<Merge type="all"/>".
But you can also hide a sub-menus with the ".directory" files that you will find in "/usr/share/desktop-directories". Just copy the one you want to hide (settings, system, etc) in "/home/your-name/.local/share/desktop-directories", edit it and add:
NoDisplay=true

As said... it's my first time. I was trying to alter what i thought was *the* menu... it was the 'xfce menu'-applet in my top panel.
Future reference for other numbnuts like me:
The 'real' applications-menu is the one after right-clicking anywhere on the desktop and you can set the applet-menu to also use that --default desktop menu file-- so both are the same.
Sorry for the bother,
jester.
