Got this fishy-smelling email...

... about spamming problems and warning about account purges and whatnot. Methinks this smells of, well, phishing, but ya never know. Does anyone know about this?

Thanks!

Re: Got this fishy-smelling email...

Me too, but as it only relates to the xfce forum and nothing else, i.e. no stocks and shares advice, no pills that enlarge certain body parts, etc. then I think it looks genuine.

Perhaps the forum admins can confirm?

Re: Got this fishy-smelling email...

It is indeed legit, just doing some house cleaning smile  If you use your account (posted atleast once) you should be ok, we're going over accts that haven't posted/logged in in a year or so.

Re: Got this fishy-smelling email...

I'm using this thread as a place to post to ensure I'm not part of the cull! I hadn't logged in in ages, but I don't want to be culled. I use xfce4 components by choice and for a reason, they are good stuff! :-)

Re: Got this fishy-smelling email...

Dudes seriously ya oughta go about it in a less smelly way then tongue all my bells started ringing, down to the helpful links to save me the trouble of typing the address in manually and whatnot. True, no mysterious admin asking for my details or anything, no financial info or "prizes", but Heaven knows what's happening eh?

Thanks for clearing it up anyway smile

Maybe you should lay off the weed, you seem to be getting paranoid ;-)

No warning bells went off for me, I think it was entirely reasonable!

Been a sysadmin for a few years now - comes with the territory tongue still, coming here and asking what's up sounds like a perfectly healthy amount of paranoia considering what's out there wink

Re: Got this fishy-smelling email...

Well... extreme circumstances require extreme measures... we have about 9000 accounts of which i think only 200 to 300 are actually real ppl... so I annoyed only that much ppl... all the rest was food for the bots wink

Re: Got this fishy-smelling email...

As other posters I also got the mail warning.

First of all: Heads of to the admins ... they could just as easily have deleted/inactivated all the indicated accounts but they have been so polite to sent a warning. Kudos!

Secondly: Drastic situations call for drastic measures. Being an admin on (another) forum I know how spam can pollute the forum.
So just to make sure that I am not considered a spammer ...

Re: Got this fishy-smelling email...

I haven't posted in ages, and my post count is still low, making me look like a spammer smile

I really like xfce though, its really fast compared to gnome, while not sacrificing usability/looks.

Glad I followed the link  smile
Been a while since I was here.  Like so many others I couldn't imagine being without Xfce.  Thanks for the fora and the software!

Re: Got this fishy-smelling email...

I am a KDE user, but I have experimented with XFCE in the past and it will certainly be experimented with in the Future. So, to protect my seldom-used account here, I am making this post.

Thanks!

Re: Got this fishy-smelling email...

Wow, it appears that was my _first_post_ in the three years that this account has been open. Has it been that long since I tried XFCE?

Are there any Hebrew- or Arabic-speaking XFCE users out there? If I remember correctly, I did not stick with XFCE because of RTL issues. Can someone tell me about their experience with RTL in XFCE?

Thanks!

Re: Got this fishy-smelling email...

I'm gonna just assume this is the official "me too" thread for people who fall under the criteria (never having posted) but are really real people who would like to keep their accounts on these forums.

I haven't been using Xfce for a bit, but I'd actually like to get back to it at some point and possibly/hopefully even contribute some code. I like the design philosophy of Xfce way better than Gnome or KDE, they just have an advantage in polish and applications the last time I checked. That's just because they've been around way longer and have been incorporated as the default desktops in most major distributions. Beyond it being faster, I've always got the impression Xfce was just better than those two alternatives. But I'm kind of a snob when it comes to design--maybe that's why it takes me forever to finish coding projects.

That was quite a tangent. But yes, I'm a real person and want to keep my account active on these forums.

Just out of curiousity, how does this stop spam, which comes from active, posting accounts?  :?

Re: Got this fishy-smelling email...

The portion of deleting inactive accounts really doesn't, but while we're at it why not.. theres way to many accts with no login/posts smile The major thing that should help stop spam (*knock knock*) is that new members now need a mods approval before they're considered "active" (can post etc)

Just El_Angelo + others trying to make your experience here in the forums helpful/pleasurable smile

Re: Got this fishy-smelling email...

Well I had forgotten that I had an account here. I don't use xfce regularly but if I wanted information or help it would be good to have an already existing account.

Maybe the passive accounts don't affect you directly. But most of the time their signatures and urls in their "website" tag are websites we do not want to be related with. I'd prefer if all of those are out of the db.
