Custom icons for categories in xfdesktop menu are not displayed

Dear community,

after a bit of try&error I managed to get my main menu back into the form I learned to love. However something strange is happening:

I cannot set my own icon (PNG, 32x32 pixel) as category in the *.directory files in my ~.config. I provide the full path to the png image yet all I see is a "File" icon.
I must note that the same icon (with the same path) works when used in a *.desktop file.

What could be the problem?

I can provide the specific snippets if neccessary.
