Hello everybody..
In the last week I've installed the new version of my preferred distro Slackware: I was using the 12.2 and now I've the last 13.0.. I always prefer to make a clean install instead of upgrading. Obviously this means that every single package that isn't installed by default by your distro needs to be installed again..
So I wanted to install the notification daemon for xfce and I was looking the web for dependencies when I found this link:
http://spuriousinterrupt.org/projects/xfce4-notifyd.
Xfce4-notifyd is a simple, visually-appealing notification daemon for Xfce
that implements the
Freedesktop.org
Desktop Notifications Specification.
But is this a replacement for the standard xfce-notification-daemon or is this an improvement for it?
Does anybody knows what differences exist between the two tools? In one world: what is better to install?
I hope that someone is able to clarify my confusion.. Thank you very much for pay attention..

xfce4-notifyd was ment as a replacement for notification-daemon-xfce as the later is old and unsupported/maintained now. Not to mention xfce4-notifyd is plain sexy

More sexy for those who have the compositor enabled.
Personally, I prefer notification-daemon-xfce which can be used with Xfce 4.6.x.

heh maybe so, but even with out compositing the fading effects are nice to have... seems more modern. plus the fact that Nick doesn't maintain the old notification-daemon-xfce is another good reason, maybe not so much right now but down the road.

Of course.
And the new features implemented by jeromeg in xfce4-notifyd are promising.
Edit, forgotten the link: http://jeromeg.blog.free.fr/index.php?p … e4-notifyd

Thank you very much to both of you, s0ulslack and Wapush, for your quickly reply at my question..
But reading your posts a new doubt is born on my mind.. The two notification method, notification-daemon-xfce and xfce4-notifyd, are complementary? I mean: notification-daemon uses to make a call by
notify-send
while I don't know how xfce-notify does the same call.. the only info I was able to find on the homepage is that xfce-notifyd.. "implements the Freedesktop.org Desktop Notifications Specification."
Maybe could you clarify me this last doubt? I must admit that I'm thinking to pass at xfce-notifyd, even if this project is frozen at the 0.10 version, it seems more promising.. but I don't want to lost all the notification that I have with the standard daemon for xfce.. wicd, the mount, unmount devices.. etc. etc..
Thank you very much for your attention, as always..!

heh no problem xfce4-notifyd is completely compatible with anything that uses libnotify/notify-send or any of the other language bindings for libnotify/notification daemons

ok man thank you very much again! Now I'm surely gonna install xfce-notifyd after having removed notification-daemon-xfce..
I'll add [SOLVED] to the title of this thread and I'll wish you all the best.. See you soon!!
bye!
