Thunar for an idiot user, kids or moms/grandmas ? question/advice ?

I want to set up a linux system for a novice user (kids, grandma/mom, etc).

Can I make the "filesystem" hard drive icon disappear somehow?
As newbie non-root users I don't want them browsing the hard drive filesystem.

I was looking at the source code, can anyone give advice on what to comment out
to make the hard drive icon go away.

much thanks !!!

You're going through far more trouble than you need to.

Menu/Settings/Xfce Settings Manager
Click Desktop
Select the Icons tab
Uncheck File system

Poof!  The Filesystem icon is gone. smile

He's talking about the thunar sidebar, not xfdesktop's icon view.

Yeah, the code for that is in thunar-shortcuts-model.c....   not sure what to comment out though.

Interesting: if you get the side pane to show shortcuts rather a tree (Ctrl+B), you can right-click on the listings and see a grayed-out 'Remove Shortcut' (also 'Rename Shortcut') next to each item, including File System.

Which maybe means you can remove the File System shortcut if logged in as root. But would the item re-appear if logged in as ordinary user?

I had say you try to hide stuff that is far from important. Having the ability to browse the root partition isn't something that will boo-off a "newbie". After all you cannot edit/delete files, what are you afraid of? You can always use the "parent folder" button to get there anyway. Plus it is available in the "Go" menubar. IMO you will just be wasting time.
