When you open xfce4-mixer, what options appear in the Sound card drop-down list?

Thank you for your reply, however can't answer you as I installed Ubuntu over Xfce.
Hdmi is working now.

I had this same issue. I believe its not with XFCE, but with ALSA/PULSE AUDIO. I uninstalled ALSA and installed OSS and reinstalled XFCE-MIXER plugin just to make sure and used
ossxmix
to turn on HDMI and it works perfect. I am using ArchLinux though, so maybe debian/ubuntu are different.
Well, hope it helps someone.
