Nasty Bug

I was in the Xfce preferences menu, Appearances, using the down arrow key to look at all of the different window styles.  When I reached the end I pressed the key again and was blown all the way out of Xfce and X to the login prompt. 

When I entered my username & password I was simply returned to the login prompt again.  I removed and reinstalled xorg with apt-get from the command line but that didn't help.  I am now typing this from my Windows computer because my Debian/Xfce system is buggered and won't even bring up the desktop.

Anyone?
