background on two monitors with different resolutions

Hi,
I'm using XFCE on a laptop Samsung Q40 with Intel 945GM graphics. The resolution on the laptop's screen is roughly 1200x700 or so. As a background I have a gradient between blue and green.

If I plug in the external monitor, everything works fine, except that the background isn't adjusted to the new resolution. New resolution is 1280x1024, and I don't get a nice gradient, but rather two gradient backgrounds separated from each other by a horizontal line in roughly 1/3 of the screen's height.

Any suggestions how can I get a nice gradient background on the external monitor?

Best,
Lukasz
