[Solved] shutdown reboot buttons greyed out after update to 4.8

hello,
yesterday i've updated my mothers desktop to 4.8, doing gentoo's update-world process. i already noticed that time, no shutdown button is available for her anymore sad

this early morning done that update here at my desktop, same behaviour. spend the evening to look for the solution, but to no avail. shutdown via button went well in the former release 4.6 or so(don't know exactly, but using gentoo's x86).

i'm using xfce since several years, this release seems to have a hard takeoff. would be nice if you could give me a hint why it's not working anymore and, even more important, how to fix that.

what i've tryed already:
-installing policykit by adding it to my USE-flags and rebuild xfce4-meta.
-read the docs at http://wiki.xfce.org/faq#session_manager. my users are in plugdev, /etc/dbus-1/system.d/hal.conf contains the line

<allow send_destination="org.freedesktop.Hal"
           send_interface="org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.SystemPowerManagement"/>

for that group. since it worked before, i see no reason why it should not work anymore, since no hal update happend

-rebuild dbus
-rebuild hald
-used slim/xdm or disabled that and start via startxfce4, no difference

my configuration:
gentoo amd64, x86 default. use-flags i may provide, if necessary.

thanks a lot
Jörg

Installing and login through GDM normally fixes the issue.

In fact, when console-kit is installed, it automatically looks for this to check if yes or no the user is allowed to shutdown despit the sudo/hal setup.

You can make a dirty fix through the xinitrc file:
http://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6690#c3

It used to work fine for me, is probably still the case.

Re: [Solved] shutdown reboot buttons greyed out after update to 4.8

hello,
is there a way to log whether consolkit says yes or no in it's check for shutdown/reboot allowance?

additionally, i noticed slim.log contains this if i've logged via xdm/slim and choose the logout menu entry:

** (xfce4-session:3927): WARNING **: Program 'sudo' was not found.

i will give the dirty fix a try tomorrow.
thanks, Jörg

no change with the dirty fix in /etc/xdg/xfce4/xinitrc

Re: [Solved] shutdown reboot buttons greyed out after update to 4.8

in case of interest:

problem disappeared following the steps in
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-8 … 8b6fec9259

after reading bug reports
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=598150
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=28377
http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=336634
http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=336634
http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=346037
https://developer.berlios.de/bugs/?func … up_id=2663
https://bugs.gentoo.org/342291

and article
http://blog.flameeyes.eu/2010/11/11/draft-article-5307

in short words, there's something strange in USE flags at gentoo. at least no comment about missing flags was reported, when they are needed. as there is no understanding of the flags usage, there remains a bad feeling about this here.

regards,
Jörg
