I had same pb after no proper exit of xfce yesterday (on gentoo too)
Thanks for 'xfwm4 --replace' command that I don't know
Next, I know: first You save your session : Xfce menu (or right mouse click on desktop) -> Paramètres -> Session et démarrage (I'm in french environment) and Session thumbnail. So click buton "Enregistrer la session", close and disconnect from Xfce.
When re-login this must work fine
Merci bras, kenavo a wec'h all !

well thanks for so fast a reply MamyPlijadur
i run english desktop and i could not find the [i can't follow french]
Xfce menu (or right mouse click on desktop) -> Paramètres -> Session et démarrage or equivalent
still following the line for saving session further looking around i found
settings/session and startup menu
there i entered a new command xfwm4 --replace and saved the session
then the same command is appearing in Desktop Session Settings
now after restarting i get the correct xfwm4 loaded and everything work fine.
thanks for the help.
NB:
xfwm4 --replace command suggestion from gentoo forums
