Looking through the documentation, there's several places where you do things via a middle-click. My trackball has two buttons and a scroll wheel. How would I middle-click? And, for that matter, why isn't there anything in the current documentation to cover this question?

As it turns out, the question is both still important and premature. I installed XFCE on my laptop, logged out and back in. I was impressed to find that some (but not all) of the applications that started on log in for Gnome did so for XFCE. Alas, I had no panels, no toolbars, no way to do anything except for trying to get some of the apps placed where I wanted them again. I had to use an alternate console to reboot. What do I need to do to get control of XFCE and start using it? (If it helps, I followed the instructions for installing it via yum, as I use Fedora 14.)

I finally tried logging in under XFCE again, and it worked, just fine. I still need to know about middle-clicks and will have other questions, but for right now, I'm quite happy using XFCE with compiz on my laptop.

I know in my case, the Microsoft track ball optical I'm using, you press on the scroll wheel for the middle click. I think it's the same with any mouse/track ball with the middle scroll wheel.

OK, great. Any idea about using it with the touchpad on my laptop?

Try chording (two fingers on each side of the touchpad).

No, but pressing both buttons together does work on this touchpad. I'll count this as Solved, TYVM!
