[Solved] disabling all desktop icons

How do I disable all desktop icons?

On GNOME, for example, to disable icons, all you have to do is runn gconf-editor at the terminal and then navigate to apps-nautilus-preferences and uncheck the "show_desktop" option. This disables all icons on your desktop.

How do I do that in XFCE?  Please keep in mind that I know how to remove Home, Filesystem, Trash and Removeable Devices via Desktop Settings.   I'm trying remove all icons.

I'm running XFCE 4.8 on Ubuntu natty 11.04.

Re: [Solved] disabling all desktop icons

Right-click on the desktop and choose "Desktop Settings". Go to the Icons tab and uncheck all the default icons.

Also, welcome big_smile I've been using Xubuntu for only four days now because I got sick of Unity, seems like a lot of people are switching too

syntr: I wasn't clear enough in my initial post.  When I said  I know how to remove Home, Filesystem, Trash and Removeable Devices, I meant that I already found out how to remove those icons via Desktop Settings as you suggested.   What I'm trying to do is remove /all/ icons, like my documents and media files.

Umm, why wouldn't you just move them out of the ~/Desktop folder?

Re: [Solved] disabling all desktop icons

I'd really rather not do that, syntr,  because my home folder also has many files which I am used to always being in my home folder.  It's a matter of familiarity.  I am familiar with the hundred or so files being in my home folder and the hundred or so files in  ~/Desktop.

Gnome can disable all icons. And I am sure that XFCE has this feature too.

syntr, you pointed out that people running the latest version of Ubuntu are switching their window managers b/c of Unity.   In my view, Gnome 2.32 will be obsolete soon and I don't like Gnome 3.0 so I am sticking with XFCE.

One way or another I am going to find out how to disable all desktop icons in XFCE.

Set icon type to None in the desktop settings.
