how to unmount external drives safely

-- Xfce 4 Desktop Environment version 4.6.1 (Xfce 4.6) with Ubuntu 10.04 --

Context: I attach my GSM or a USB stick ‒ no problems. The system shows an icon for the device/drive on the desktop and I can read/write content. Right-clicking on the icon and selecting Unmount, though, gives the message

cannot open /media/.hal-mtab

Question: I see several informed discussions about _why_ this happens, but as a non-expert user I need some very simple "do this instead" instructions. I wouldn't mind having to use umount from the command-line, but it's been so long since I normally had to that I've forgotten the details <g>

Thanks in advance!
