Stretching Pngs?

Howdy all
I'm new to themeing for xfce.
I'm used to themeing with metacity where I can tile and stretch (same as in gtk's) but so far I can't find how to do this xfce.
This is really the only reason I can see why use pngs at all over the xpm files, keep some tiled and some stretched over top gives some really great effects.
Mind you I only been reading up on this for a few days now and tried a couple of times to convert a metacity frame I made into xfce, pretty much got it there except the stretching of pngs over a tiled based.
If this is possible please let me know how.
