Using Theme/gtk-2.0/gtkrc

I cannot for the life of me understand how to get a theme to actually use its GTK definitions. Just before posting this I tried to clone the Kiwi theme (which came with xubuntu 11.04), then changed every bg definition to "#5fff57" to no effect. What am I doing wrong?

No matter what I do I cannot get rid of all the grey backgrounds...

xfce123forum, I believe that you need to have:

base[SELECTED]    = "#5fff57"

keep on rockin' in the free world
