Normally, I use wallpapoz to manage my wallpaper, changing it every five minutes at random. Suddenly, it's stopped working. I've emailed the maintainer, but for now, all I can do to change the wallpaper is use the XFCE Desktop preferences. How can I get that to point at my custom wallpapers?

You should be able to add your own backgrounds to the /usr/share/backgrounds file.
Then, they should show up, as default, when you open the 'Desktop' settings link, from the right-click menu.

Right now, I have a number of wallpapers in ~/Pictures that wallpapoz is supposed to use. Normally, it does. I take it, then, that there's no way to tell XFCE to look in that directory instead of /usr/share/background. Wouldn't it be better if the Desktop settings had a Browse button?

The list in desktop settings is populated with images from both /usr/share/xfce4/backdrops and (if it exists) ~/.local/share/xfce4/backdrops. Instead of copying over all your files from ~/Pictures to /usr/share/xfce4/backdrops, you could link ~/Pictures to ~/.local/share/xfce4/backdrops. Keep in mind that the desktop settings program suffers performance issues as the number of images in both those directories grow.
