[Solved] xfce4-appfinder (v4.6.2-1) doesn't find most applications

I want to use xfce4-appfinder under a different DE than Xfce. I use Debian squeeze which has xfce4-appfinder version 4.6.2-1. Now I have this problem: appfinder doesn't find most of my installed applications, only a few. For example, openoffice is not found. I have this problem under both GNOME and openbox. Does anybody have an idea how I can fix this?

Now I realize that I have this problem most probably because I had no session manager running. Thus appfinder found only those entries in .local/share/applications. I will try it out with session manager on next occasion, but I will already mark this topic as solved.

The XDG_DATA_DIR or XDG_CONFIG_DIR variables were probably not set correctly, this is done in startxfce4.
