I'm a recent refuge from the Gnome-3 madness, using Xfce version 4.8.0 as distributed with Fedora 15.
I'd like to be able to replace the standard file manager oriented right-click top level menu (the one with "Open in new window", "Create launcher", and so forth ending with "Applications") with the "Applications" menu, so that a right-click on the desctop would take me directly to the Applications menu.
Is there a simple way to do this?

daggoth asked for "A Simplified Right-Click Desktop Menu", which is the same thing that I was looking for. The answer provided by jeromeg, that "You'll get this simpler right click menu if you disable desktop icons by setting "Icon type" to "None" in the last tab of the desktop preferences." solves this problem nicely, if in a somewhat undiscoverable manner.

Now to make it even better, set up a 1 pixel margin in the workspace settings so that you’ll always have somewhere to click to pop your menu.
