Compositing causes extreme system-wide graphics lag

I've been having a problem since installing Xubuntu 11.04/natty that has me extremely confused.

Whenever I have Xfce's compositing enabled, if I have another OpenGL program running such as Second Life (I always have this running), every so often - like after an hour or so - my entire system begins to graphically lag horribly, including the OpenGL program running. The performance is usually around 1-2 FPS and lasts for around half a minute before returning to normal. The only thing that _doesn't_ lag like this is the cursor, which continues moving smoothly.

I have a GTX560 Ti using the 285 proprietary driver in a TwinView configuration, so it's certainly not a lack of graphics power causing the problem.

If I have compositing turned off, this problem never occurs, but moving windows over Second Life's window then looks terrible (it leaves a black trail) and I like having shadows, transparent panels and such.

Any ideas what this could be and how it could be fixed?

Thanks in advance.
