missing icons !?

Hello,

First of all I am at a loss for vocabulary!   What are the window control "X", "-", and box icons (that I have been using for the past 15 years!) called? 

I have just installed Fedora 15 - XFCE (have been a Gnome for some time and have no XFCE experience)

When I startup -- everything looks normal, but the first time I use one of these controls, e.g., to close a "terminal session window, they dissapear from any and all other windows I open.

Very strange!
