Save session on logout saves windows but not actual open files

I switched to XFCE because gnome no longer supports session saving and I'm not sure if this is intended behavior, bug, or problem with the applications itself, but when I log out and log in again, it remembers my opened windows (such as evince and terminal-emulators) but not my open documents. So when I log in, it starts evince and my terminals correctly, but not vim with the file I was editing or the .pdfs I had opened.
