Unable to logout/shut down

I have gnome and xfce4 installed on a machine running debian unstable. Login-manager is gdm3. If I login into xfce4, I am unable to either logout or shutdown except by doing an su to root, and giving shutdown command on the terminal.

If I do a logout/shutdown from xfce, nothing happens first time. If I try again, it complains something like "Session manager must be in idle state when requesting a shutdown".

What could be happenning?
