xfce4-session-logout broken

My OS is Mint Debian Xfce. Everything is up to date. Xfce version is 4.8.1

Symptoms:
When I click Menu->Log Out the expected logout screen fails to appear. Instead I'm logged off and a few seconds later a login screen appears.

Using the terminal, $ xfce4-session-logout results in the same behaviour as the gui, ie no logout screen followed by the login etc.
Also  $ xfce4-session-logout --reboot, --version, --help, --suspend all work properly.

Everything has been working ok for several months up to a few days ago. I had tried experimenting with different panel and appearance settings. The problem surfaced the following day, after a restart.  I don't know if that caused the problem but that was the only thing I did that was out of the ordinary. Also there had been no system updates in the previous week or so.

Any and all suggestions welcome.

Thanks,
Angus
