I just installed xfce, and I'm having a problem with the application windows. They are only about 3/4 of the size they should be, have no controls, and can't be resized at all, nor can they be moved or minimized. They take input sporadically. It seems to be a setting in xfce somewhere, because the same windows work fine if I run a gnome session. Until I get this fixed, xfce is unusable, and I really want to use it. Anyone have any ideas? This seems to have started while I was trying to enable tapping on the touchpad, which also doesn't work. I think I can eventually fix that, but the windows are preventing fixing anything.
Edit: I ran apt-get purge xfce*, ran locate xfce4, and manually removed every file and folder that was found except the icon files, there were just too many of those and they shouldn't affect the application windows anyway, then reinstalled xfce4, logged into an xfce session, and was presented with the initial panel setup dialog. It looked promising, so I reconfigured the panels the way I wanted them, and opened Iceweasel. Same thing, half a window with no controls, and it won't resize or move. Bummer. I really want to like xfce, but this is getting annoying. At least this time, touchpad tapping works.
I'm running Debian Sid, btw.

Try running xfwm4.

I'm already running gdm, you can only run one at a time, and xfce should run with gdm.

xfwm4 is a window manager, which has nothing to do with a login (or "display") manager.
It looks like from what you're saying that you have no window manager running.

Well, when I try to run xfwm4, it says a windows manager is already running, and refuses to run. X is certainly running. I get the same result from a tty, after closing X, it won't run.

after closing X, it won't run.
That is normal. xfwm4 will not run X server (Xorg)
May be try :
xfwm4 --replace
Oh ! and look also in your : ~/.xsession-errors

Xfce is NOT Xubuntu. Bugs in Xubuntu don't mean that Xfce is buggy ...

Tried that, didn't work. xfwm4 is set as the windows manager when xfce is run. It's running, but apparently not correctly.

A screenshot can be helpful ...

Well, I dunno. I just logged out of Gnome and back into XFCE, and the windows seem to be normal. For ~10 logins, the app windows were abnormal, but this time they look like they should. I'll update later, the World Series is on now and I'm only half paying attention to the computer.
