Not another Gnome 3 Exile

I thought KDE 4 and Gnome 2 were too bloated for my tastes. I've been using Xubuntu for a few years and my friend tells me I didn't like KDE or Gnome because I wasn't using Compiz. I love XFCE and just never bothered to check out the community around it until recently.
