Xfce power manager is not running could not map keysym

ramaswamy@localtux ~ $ xfce4-power-manager --restart --dump
Xfce power manager is not running

(xfce4-power-manager:25292): xfce4-power-manager-WARNING **: could not map keysym 1008ffa8 to keycode

The program 'xfce4-power-manager' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadName (named color or font does not exist)'.
   (Details: serial 147 error_code 15 request_code 149 minor_code 11)
   (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

http://goodies.xfce.org/projects/applic … er-manager

says it is the latest release of xfce4
i was under the impression the hal dependancy was not necessary and unmerged hal.
now the hal is not in portage how can i install it for this purpose?
the screen brightness control does not work without the power manager working.
advice needed.

this is gentoo system. seems i cannot install hal for want of dependencies
what is alternative to make the brightness applet work?

Re: Xfce power manager is not running could not map keysym

It seems related to
https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6549

Please see also another thread here, http://forum.xfce.org/viewtopic.php?pid=25038 (I posted a while ago for the same error message, and some ideas were found)

Shortly, probably it works if you switch off numlock, or if you apply the patch from that bug report

Re: Xfce power manager is not running could not map keysym

Sorry, I was referring to the error
(xfce4-power-manager:13225): xfce4-power-manager-WARNING **: could not map keysym 1008ffa8 to keycode

but it seems the error you should analyze is

BadName (named color or font does not exist)

I don't know anything about it and I am not able to help you, but googling that phrase and "xfce power manager" it seems there are many forum posts...
Good luck :-)
