Having come to Xfce from gnome3 I am used to having a volume icon on the panel, Xfce doesn't appear to have one by default (correct me if I'm wrong) so I installed 'volume-icon alsa'
with synaptic.
Using 'Run Program' will place it on the panel however it will be gone in the next reoot.
How do I get it to remain there?
Is this done with 'Create Launcher' and if so how what details are needed?

There is one : xfce4-mixer. You would also install xfce4-volumed for a nice volume status notification.
Xfce is NOT Xubuntu. Bugs in Xubuntu don't mean that Xfce is buggy ...

Thanks angstrom,
I seen that one and it's good, however I still prefer the other as the volume can be changed by hovering over the icon and using the mouse wheel.

Have you the xfce4-panel-plugin-mixer or the icon from gmixer ? Because I have xfce4-panel-plugin-mixer and I change volume like you said : by hovering over the icon and using the mouse wheel.

Synaptic doesn't show 'xfce4-panel-plugin-mixer' only 'xfce4-mixer' which is installed.
Also installed is xfce4-volumed that you mentioned in your first post.
The one I did install and the one I was hoping to keep on the panel is 'volumeicon-alsa'
The one loaded by default is Mixer - HDA Intel (ALSA Mixer)

...so I removed the volume icon from the panel after the last post and just to day I replaced it and now I have mouse scroll control, I guess that was all I should have done after installing xfce4-volumed.
many thanks angstrom
