cannot read dvd with .tar files on it

Hi folks

I have a new installation of gentoo 64bit with an xfce desktop. My DVD drive ony seems to be able to detect .iso9660 and blank DVD's. If I try to mount a data DVD with .tar files on it they remain undetected and nothing is displayed. I am using thunar-volman-0.6.0. Any help would be appreciated.
